Most training apps quietly ask you to become a part-time sports scientist first. Learn what RPE is, learn what a mesocycle is, build a routine, pick the right exercise from a list of hundreds, then interpret a wall of charts. Valen is built on the opposite idea: the science should be heavy and the interface should be light.

The muscle-subzone model behind Valen is not something you can absorb at a glance. It splits chest into upper, mid and lower, back into lats, upper back, rhomboids and lower back, and tracks fatigue for each one separately. You do not need to understand any of that to benefit from it. Here is how that works in practice.

Step 1: Logging that does not need any knowledge

Quick Log is the clearest example. You open it and see the muscle groups: chest, back, shoulders, arms, legs, core. Tap the ones you trained. A large stepper sets the number of sets, with one-tap presets for 4, 8, 12 and 16. Press save. That is the whole flow.

Behind that, tapping a group selects all of its subzones, and the sets are split evenly across them, so "Chest, 9 sets" spreads over upper, mid and lower chest the way a typical chest day would. Anything more specific, like choosing individual muscles or adding supporting work, is folded away until you ask for it. If you have never used a logging app before, you can still get a correct entry in a few taps.

If you prefer detail, the full workout log is there too: exercises, sets, reps, weight, warm-up, drop and failure sets, and a rest timer. Detail is optional. Nothing in the app punishes you for logging less.

Step 2: Analysis you do not have to run

Every logged set changes a fatigue number for the specific muscle subzones it worked. That number decays over time, so recovery is shown as a percentage that climbs back up hour by hour. You do not enter your sleep, your heart rate or how you feel. The recovery map is calculated entirely from your training log.

The output is deliberately plain. A colour on a body map. A percentage next to a muscle. If mid chest is 51% recovered and lower chest is 18%, you can see that the same "chest day" did not hit both equally, without knowing a single fibre-recruitment fact.

Step 3: Choosing exercises without knowing exercise science

Ask most people what trains lower chest and you get a shrug. Valen ships a library of 200+ exercises across chest, back, shoulders, arms, legs, core and cardio, and every one is mapped to the subzones it actually loads, with primary, secondary and tertiary intensity. Search it by exercise name or muscle.

You do not have to browse it, either. The daily suggestion looks at what has recovered and points you at that. When you build a routine, you can pick from the library and see immediately which muscles each exercise covers. The point is that "which exercise should I pick" is answered by the app rather than by prior knowledge.

The complicated part is still there, it is just hidden

Simple does not mean shallow. Valen tracks 15+ muscle subzones, fatigue that decays hour by hour, weekly volume against MEV, MAV and MRV targets, e1RM and PR tracking, and CNS strain. The trick is layering. The first layer, what you tap and read, is designed for someone who has never trained with an app. The deeper layers are there for the person who wants to know why a score moved.
