Your Data in Valen: Offline, Export, Backup

By John Arthur · Last updated September 20, 2026

Before installing a training app, most people want to know three things: does it need an account, does it work without signal, and can I get my data out. Here are the answers for Valen, including the parts that are less flattering.

SHORT ANSWER

  • No account needed to use Valen.
  • Works fully offline. Logging and recovery maths run on your phone.
  • Data stays on the device by default.
  • Export is free and saves a JSON file. There is no CSV export and no import from other apps.
  • Cloud backup is optional, Pro only, and needs a Google sign-in.
  • Anonymous analytics are on by default and can be switched off.

No account, works offline

You can install Valen, finish onboarding and log workouts without creating an account. Every calculation, from the set-level fatigue to the hour-by-hour recovery decay, runs on the phone itself. That is why the app works in a basement gym with no signal, and why there is no loading spinner between a logged set and an updated map.

What is stored, and where

Your sessions, custom exercises, routines and settings are stored on your device. Valen does not upload them unless you turn on cloud backup. There are no ads and no social feed, so there is nothing that needs your data to build an audience.

Analytics and crash reports

Valen does use anonymous analytics and crash reporting to find bugs and see which features are used. They are on by default, do not include personal information, and can be switched off in Settings under About and Support, Share anonymous analytics. The full detail is in the privacy policy.

Exporting and importing your data

Settings has an Export data option on both plans. It writes one JSON file with your workout history, custom exercises and settings to your Downloads folder. Import reads that same kind of file and merges it with what is already on the phone, so it works for moving to a new phone or restoring after a reset.

Two limits to know about. Valen does not export CSV, so opening your history in a spreadsheet takes extra work. And Valen cannot import CSV files from Hevy, Strong or any other app, so a switch from another app starts with an empty history.

Cloud backup

Cloud backup is optional and part of Pro. It needs a Google sign-in, stores your training data encrypted, and is meant for restoring on a new phone. You can delete the backup and its account data from Settings, or ask by email. Backups are deleted automatically after 12 months of inactivity, according to the privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Valen need an account?

No. Valen works with no account and no sign-in. An account (a Google sign-in) is needed only if you turn on optional cloud backup, which is a Pro feature.

Does Valen work offline?

Yes. Logging and every recovery calculation run on your phone, so it works in a gym with no signal. An internet connection is needed only for buying Pro and for cloud backup.

Where is my workout data stored?

On your phone, by default. Nothing is uploaded unless you turn on cloud backup, which is optional and Pro only.

Can I export my workout data from Valen?

Yes, on the free plan and on Pro. Settings has an Export data option that saves a JSON file with your history, custom exercises and settings to your Downloads folder. Valen exports JSON only, not CSV.

Can I import workouts from Hevy, Strong or a CSV file?

No. Valen imports only its own JSON export files. History from other apps cannot be imported.

Does Valen collect analytics?

Yes, anonymous ones. Anonymous product analytics and crash reports are on by default and never include personal information. You can switch them off in Settings under About and Support, Share anonymous analytics. Your workout log is not part of them.

How does cloud backup work and who can use it?

Cloud backup is a Pro feature. You sign in with Google, and your training data is backed up encrypted so you can restore it on another phone. You can delete the backup and its account data from Settings.
